How Expensive Is a Custom Closet?

Apr 11, 2022

Like most products we purchase and projects we embark upon, there are three price points: the bare bones, the sky’s the limit and somewhere in between. Custom closets are no different. Luckily, there companies (like ours!) that give you a bit more bang for your buck by not charging exorbitant prices for items that add value and convenience to your space. That said, there are certainly design choices that lend themselves to a more lux approach and others that are strictly for convenience. Places you may want to spend less are for closets that are rarely used, but in high traffic spots like a child’s room closet or your own walk-in you may want to splurge just a little bit more.

Plan it out in advance.

After you’ve viewed hundreds of Pinterest ideas and sketched out your design at home on an iPad or piece of paper, it’s time to take advantage of our free design services. A simple phone call will have you matched with a skilled and talented designer who has seen it all. He or she will provide a layout that we bet you’ll not have even considered!

Make (and stick to!) a budget.

Budgets are boring. We get it, but they are necessary. When you talk to your designer ask him/her for the cost difference in finishes, hardware, shelving configurations, drawer options, add-ons, etc. Also, build in a contingency in case you need to pay out more for something than you thought or if you decide to add a feature later in the process.

Consider extra features.

We wrote a two-part series on nine convenient add-ons available to you. You can read Part 1 here and Part 2 here.

Splurge a bit.

Chandelier? Beautiful floors? Cedar lined walls? Why not! When you consider this room is used every single day multiple times a day, why not add a little bit of glam? In fact since it’s such a small space compared to the rest of your home, the cost to add luxurious finishes is much less than it would be to apply that same finish to a larger room.

How big do you need?

You may be simply using an existing footprint where your current closet stands. But will it be large enough for your dream closet needs? Maybe it’s time to push out a couple of walls or even dedicate an unused bedroom into a glamourous his and hers dressing area. Do you need an entire wall dedicated to shoes? Be realistic in your calculations and try to think of everything this space will be used for when you calculate your size needs.

What are your needs?

What will you be using this space for? Is it just for day-to-day dressing and clothes? Or are you storing other items in here like out of season clothing or mementos, bathroom linens, ballgowns, etc. Do you plan to have a dresser built in? Perhaps you need a jewelry drawer under lock and key or glass doors to protect your more expensive items. Be very clear how your space will be used, so you and your designer can plan accordingly.
