Helpful Tips For An Organized Home & Office
Love Your Laundry Room
The laundry room may be one of your home’s smallest, but arguably, hardest working rooms. In fact, it could be used every day by at least one person in your household – especially if it has multiple functions like a mudroom or utility room or even just a pass through from the garage to the kitchen. Regardless, there is no reason this shouldn’t be a clutter free and attractive spot in your house, and with the use of well thought out custom cabinetry, it can be. A bit of planning and creativity, this little mainstay may become one of your favorites!
Plan it out. Consider exactly what you’ll be using this room for other than washing and drying clothes. Will you be folding and ironing as well? Is there sink and if so, will you use that area for additional tasks like cleaning paint brushes, pets, etc.? Will you be storing cleaning and utility items here? Will you need extra cabinets to store laundry soaps and other cleaning items? Talk to a designer who can help you decide the best type of built-in cabinets that will solve your space challenges.
Customize the space. When you select your custom cabinets, you can choose traditional styles and colors like white or gray, or you can get a little wilder and pick colors and finishes you might not choose in a larger, more public area. Because this room is typically smaller and not on display, you can decorate it in themes that are a little more eclectic and exciting. Consider bright wallpaper or bold paint to complement colored cabinets. Install stone countertops, chose interesting drawer handles, hang pictures, use bright throw rugs, etc. There are so many interesting ways to make this area fun, bright and inviting.
Prepare productive zones. The basic functions in this space – washing, drying, sorting, folding – need ample space to get it all done, so consider what you need. If you have a long enough wall, install a counter atop lower cabinets, but if space is limited you can install a counter directly above the washer and dryer. Remember to include electrical outlets in convenient spots and if possible, charging stations. Make sure the room is well lit as well.
Include some convenient add-ons. To be as productive as possible– and have fun while you’re doing it! – add items like a wall-installed ironing board, hanging or telescoping rods, hooks, etc., for other laundry related activities. If room permits, mount a small television or keep a smart speaker or Amazon Echo for music on demand. Install shelves and arrange pretty baskets to hide items like laundry supplies, clothes that need mending, etc.
